H.E.A.R.T. Africa – Helping and educating young girls and women with One Toad Photography

In many parts of the world, something as natural as a period can become a barrier to education, dignity, and opportunity. But in Kenya, one organization is flipping the script—and I got to witness it firsthand. 📸✨

🌟 Meet H.E.A.R.T. Africa

H.E.A.R.T. (Health Education Africa Resource Team) is a faith-based nonprofit doing incredible work across Kenya. Their mission? To stabilize, empower, and uplift women and children through health, education, and economic programs. 💪🏾📚

One of their most powerful initiatives is called Freedom for Girls—and it’s changing lives. 🩷

🩸 Why Feminine Hygiene Matters

In rural Kenya, many girls miss school during their periods because they don’t have access to sanitary products or clean water. 😔 Some use rags, leaves, or even newspaper—methods that are unsafe and undignified.

But thanks to H.E.A.R.T., over 329,000 girls have received:

• ✅ A year’s supply of sanitary towels

• ✅ Four pairs of undergarments

• ✅ Education on menstrual health and hygiene

And most importantly? They’re staying in school. 🎓💃🏾

💧 The Water Challenge

Clean water is still a luxury in many parts of Kenya. 💦 Without it, managing periods becomes even harder. That’s why programs like Freedom for Girls are so vital—they provide both products and education, even in areas where water is scarce.

📸 One Toad Photography in Action

In 2022, I had the honor of volunteering with H.E.A.R.T. Africa through One Toad Photography. It was more than just a photo trip—it was a life-changing experience. 🙌🏾

I captured moments of joy, learning, and empowerment:

• Girls receiving their hygiene kits 🎁

• Smiles during health education sessions 😊

• Women mentoring the next generation of leaders 👩🏾‍🏫

The energy was electric. The impact? Unforgettable. 💥

🎉 Fun Facts

• 🦟 Over 137,000 malaria nets have been made by HIV-positive mothers supported by H.E.A.R.T.

• 🛏️ They run a guest lodge in Nairobi that helps fund their programs.

• 👧🏾 Girls who once received help are now giving back as mentors!

💬 Final Thoughts

Menstrual health isn’t just about hygiene—it’s about human rights. When girls have the tools and confidence to manage their periods, they can chase their dreams without interruption. 🌈

H.E.A.R.T. Africa is doing just that—and I’m proud One Toad Photography got to be part of the story. 📖💗
